The human body is fascinating

I keep telling people this shit in real life and they don’t believe me.
I’ve seen it from multiple sources, and this just adds another (albeit usually unreliable) source.

This is actually legit, guys. This is how your eyes move when you’re thinking about something. It’s actually a good way to tell if someone is lying or not, because they’ll look to their left (your right, durr) when they’re constructing false memories, and to their right when they’re actually remembering them.

HOLY CRAP. SAVING THIS FOR FUTURE REF.

i’m going to save this for detail in stories so people can look up the direction i said my character’s eyes looked and go like “woah i wonder if that’s intentional” and it TOTALLY WILL BE

then save it and upload it to that site

Arty people should make wingdings-y fonts with their own doodles. Just a bunch of tiny shippy pictures.

I did this once to make a typable version of a language I had made up.

It was WONDERFUL.

Although the neck tutorial is rather useful…some of the others are redundant in my opinion. I think artists should actually use their own eyes, rather than observations from other peoples art. I think you learn more that way.

Today I gave my students a quick presentation on some of the basic considerations for composition, which I am now sharing with you! I’ve given them separate talks about color and tonal value/contrast, which are also super important compositional concerns. (I’ll be sharing those presentations too once I properly format them)

I personally love learning about different compositional techniques. It’s fun to think about the ways that the brain views & sorts images, and how we can trick it into feeling a certain way or looking at certain aspects of an image first! It’s easy to fall into compositional ruts (which I am also guilty of) because a lot of art gets by with mediocre, though serviceable, compositions. If you can generally understand what’s happening in an image then it’s generally fine. However, it’s the truly great compositions, where everything in the whole image has been considered and ‘clicks’ together, that bump up an illustration to a visual slam dunk. NC Wyeth is one of my favorite artists for this reason: his compositions are rock solid, varied based on the image’s intent, and always enhance the mood or action he is depicting.

For extra reading, some online compositional resources that I’ve found helpful or interesting include:
Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis (download it for FREE. Such a great book all-around.)
Gurney Journey (check out the “Composition” tag, but really everything he posts is great)
The Schweitzer guide to spotting tangents

In addition to writing, I also reblog art and great writing/drawing tips.

This tutorial is incredible if you are a character designer looking to diversify your female characters. Adding weight to a character is not as simple as drawing a simple body and curving the lines; you have to know the body structure to get it right.

I tried the second character from the left “Gwen” and was shocked at how close my sketch came to this tutorial.

A helpful guide for comic artists, character designers, and cosplayers alike.

Figure Drawing

I took one of his classes back when I went to art school and he’s an incredible professor and instructor. I’d advise people to look through his studies and even buy his book. It’s not necessarily how to draw correct anatomy but to know it while making it stylized. His class basically teaches the mechanics of the body while using imagination.

Seriously, I recommend anyone to attending one of his online workshops. It’s kind of pricey but much more affordable than what I paid. Then again I had my own benefits.

I am probably not the best person to be asking since I am still learning myself, so take this with a grain of salt. Your best bet is just to observe metal objects in real life or find references. But I hope this at least points you in the right direction!!
